Question by Erm… someone.: If I save an image to my computer and upload it directly to my weblog from my computer, is that hotlinking?
I have an icon I want – but the host says: ‘No Hotlinking. Please save it and upload it to your own server.” So I’ve saved it to my computer and (since this is concerning livejournal) I’ve uploaded the icon straight to my barrage of other icons. Is this still hotlinking? Do I have to upload it to photobucket or imageshack before I can use it anywhere else? Or is saving it to my computer enough? Does this question even make sense, because I looked up ‘hotlinking’ and it doesn’t make any sense. Every sight is telling me I have to upload it onto my own server. So is uploading it to anyplace from my computer making it so that it isn’t hotlinked? Thanks in advance for any help. I just caught on how to link to other websites and now this comes up. I don’t have the slightest idea when it comes to these sorts of things involving technology, so if I’m not being clear or you don’t understand that question and can’t assist me, that’s fine.

Hotlinking is when you link directly to an image stored on someone else’s server. So every time someone views it (wherever you put it) it ‘downloads’ from the original server, using up their bandwidth.
For example, if I wanted to use the Yahoo Logo ^ I *should* download it and upload it somewhere to use for myself (ie. photobucket) and use that link.
It would be hotlinking if I insert into my page/blog:
Because http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sch/gr/ga_ans_uh_logo.gif is located on Yahoo’s server. Every time someone views this image on my blog/page it downloads from Yahoo’s server.
You should upload your images to somewhere like http://www.photobucket.com , http://www.imageshack.us or even http://www.tinypic.com and then use those links for your site/blog as you are allowed to use the bandwidth you are allocated on those sites.
